Paving Stone Installation Edmonton
Custom Patios, Walkways, Driveways & Steps
Paving stone transforms your outdoor space from functional to something you actually want to spend time in. We design and install custom hardscape projects across Edmonton—from simple front walkways to full backyard patios with built-in steps and raised seating areas.
Every project starts with a proper base, quality materials, and attention to detail. That's what separates a patio that shifts and sinks after two winters from one that stays level and looks great for years.
What We Install
Patios
The centrepiece of most backyard builds. We install paving stone patios in any size or shape—straight edges, curves, multi-level with steps, or wrapped around a firepit. Your patio is built on a properly compacted granular base designed for Edmonton's freeze-thaw cycles.
Walkways & Pathways
Front walks, side yard paths, and garden pathways. We match or complement your existing hardscape and ensure proper grading so water drains away from your foundation—not toward it.
Driveways
Paving stone driveways are a major curb appeal upgrade over standard concrete. We build them on a heavy-duty base to handle vehicle loads without shifting, and use edge restraints to keep everything locked tight.
Steps & Raised Patios
Grade changes are common across Edmonton lots, especially walkouts and sloped yards. We build paving stone steps and raised patio areas with proper structural support, drainage, and clean transitions between levels.
Why Paving Stone Over Concrete?
Concrete cracks. It's that simple. Edmonton's freeze-thaw cycles put enormous stress on solid slabs, and once a crack forms, it only gets worse. Paving stone handles that movement because each unit flexes independently. Beyond durability:
Repairable: A damaged paver can be pulled and replaced individually—no tearing out an entire slab
Design flexibility: Endless colour, shape, and pattern combinations to match your home's style
Drainage options: Permeable paver systems are available for areas with drainage concerns
Higher home value: Quality hardscape is one of the best returns on investment for outdoor upgrades
Longevity: A properly installed paving stone surface with the right base will outlast poured concrete in Edmonton's climate
Why We Use Barkman brand
We've installed a lot of paving stone over the years, and Barkman is our go-to. Here's why:
Colour retention: Barkman products hold their colour significantly better than other brands—less fading over time, even with Edmonton's intense summer UV
Durability: The pavers don't break down or become brittle like we've seen with other manufacturers, especially after several freeze-thaw seasons
Wide availability: Barkman is widely available across Alberta, which means consistent supply, no project delays, and a huge selection of styles and colours to choose from
Proven locally: These products are made for our climate—not shipped in from somewhere with mild winters
We do work with other brands when a specific look or product is needed, but Barkman is our primary recommendation for Edmonton projects.
Built for Edmonton's Climate
Every paving stone project we build accounts for Edmonton's specific conditions:
Freeze-thaw rated base depths: We don't cut corners on base thickness—Edmonton's frost penetration demands a proper granular base
Proper drainage grading: Water moves away from your home, not under your pavers
Edge restraint on every project: Keeps pavers from creeping or spreading over time
Polymeric sand standard: Locks joints, prevents weeds, and resists washout during heavy rains
Pair It With Your Full Landscape Build
Paving stone installs work best as part of a larger landscape project. When we're already on-site handling grading, retaining walls, sod, and planting, adding hardscape is more efficient and cost-effective than doing it separately.

Our Design & Installation Process
-
1. Consultation & Design
We assess your property, discuss your vision, and plan the layout. If you have a landscape design, we work from that. If not, we'll help you figure out sizing, shape, and product selection.
-
2. Excavation & Base Preparation
This is where the job is won or lost. We excavate to the proper depth, install geotextile fabric where needed, and compact a granular base in lifts. Patio base and driveway base are built to different specs—driveways get a heavier base to handle the load.
-
3. Screed & Paver Installation
A levelled bedding sand layer goes down, then pavers are laid in your chosen pattern. We cut edges clean, install edge restraints, and ensure consistent joint spacing throughout.
-
4. Polymeric Sand & Compaction
We sweep polymeric sand into all joints and compact the entire surface with a plate tamper. Polymeric sand hardens when activated with water, locking pavers in place and preventing weed growth and ant hills between joints.
